How to choose bass strings

①Strings Material~Nickel & Stainless~

What you should know that 2 types of materials.

Nickel
This material is usually used.
Standard sound♪

Stainless
It is rough to the touch compared to nickel.
Brighter sound♪

Look at package mentions.


Others include alloy materials and black nylon, but just remember two materials to start with!

When slapping, I prefer the “stainless steel” sound.

②Bass Strings Construction~Round wound, Flat wound & Half wound~

Difference in touch.

The feel of the strings influences your playing.

Round Wound

This is the standard of bass string construction.

Smooth to touch
Mild sound
Often strung on fretless bass

Half Wound

Features
Round Wound with the surface of the strings shaved
Smoother than Round Wound
Rougher to touch than Flat Wound

③Gauge(thickness)

For 4-string bass is

1st string is the thinnest.
4th string is the thickest.

Mention by number(Unit is inches)

Regular gauge(Medium gauge)】”45・65・85・105″
Light gauge】”40・60・80・100″
Heavy gauge】”50・70・85(90)・105(110)”

There are many combinations.
