History of Precision Bass

The “Precision Bass” was introduced by Fender in 1951.

Until then, the term bass meant “wood bass” or “double bass“.

So there’s been a revolution in the bass world!

The size is larger than a guitar, but the body is smaller than wood bass
Making it easier to transport.
This size allows the bass to be held and played like a guitar.
It had no frets which used to be difficult to play, but now fretted, making it easier to play.
The electric bass can be played through an amp.

What a wonderful!!
That is “Precision Bass“, also called “PB“and “P-bass“.

The frets allow for accurate pitch!

Difference in pickups

The first major difference is the number of pickups.

PB has one pickup.

That pickups separated into 1st & 2nd string side and 3rd & 4th string side.
It Called “Split coil pickup
One Volume knob & Tone Volume knob.
Tone Volume which muffles the sound when turned down.

Jazz Bass
Jazz Bass has 2 pickups.

Front pickup & Rear pickup.
(Each pickup is adjusted with the volume knob)
Tone volume functions the same as PB.

Thank you for reading!
It was great history of Precision Bass!!

This bass is used by many funk and R&B bassists.
Of course rock players use it too!

・In terms of origin, you should check out the “James Jemerson” soundtrack.
・For flat playing, I prefer the sound of Green Day’s Mike Dahnt.
・In terms of technical bassists, I would say Billy Sheen of Mr. BIG.

Vintage basses fetch high prices.

Plebe can be used for a variety of genres.
